Today is my dad's birthday! I'm so thankful for a dad who always took time to take me fishing! Along with all the other important aspects of parenting he gave the gift that matters most in a child's life - time. I'm grateful for all the fantastic memories that we have from over the years! We had some great trips and a few where we got skunked*. Looking forward to making some more fishing memories tomorrow!
The other night I was carrying my son while we were walking and I asked him if he wanted to get down and walk. He responded with his customary statement "Holdg me!" "Holdg" is his way of saying hold. He knows how to say it correctly, but he still loves to say "holdg" instead of hold. I then asked him why he wanted to be "holdged". Since he asks "why" to almost everything these days, I thought I would turn the tables on him. I thought maybe I would stump him with my question. I was wrong. His immediate response - "because it's a perfect idea!".
Those moments are ones I try to savor. Parenting can be challenging and there are many exasperating times, but it is these moments that make it worth it! Relish the special moments God grants you with your children! Spend time with your kids this weekend! You can make no greater investment!
Psalm 127:3 Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him.
While traveling yesterday my family took a pit stop at Chick-fil-A. I told my son Evan, who is 2 that we would be stopping at a chicken restaurant and he proudly exclaimed "Chick-fil-A!!". He loves his chicken sandwich, while my daughter is more of nuggets connoisseur. They both love Chick-fil-A, but what makes this restaurant chain so successful?
Last month Chick-fil-A's founder Truett Cathy passed away. I had the privilege of hearing him speak several years ago while I was in college and I was greatly impressed. Dave Ramsey shared a blog post about 7 life lessons that he learned from Truett Cathy. It's a great post and I hope that you will take a couple of minutes to read it and that it will cause you think about how implementing these principles could impact your life!
Wisdom gives us the ability to see beyond the moment. One benefit of that is being able to "see" what is coming and prepare. What preparations do you need to be making today so that you will not suffer tomorrow?
Last Friday I shared a link on my Facebook page from Jon Acuff. I received a good amount of feedback on it and thought it would be worth posting again. It is a short read, but a great reminder for parents. If you have young children, take a couple of minutes and check out this great post. Don't let culture be the loudest voice in your child's life!
On Sunday it can be so easy to worship the Lord, but many times it can be so hard on Monday. Monday represents reality. Work, school, stress, problems and a host of other variables that can leave us anything but worshipful. While it might be hard, we need to remember that the God of Sunday is the God of Monday! Monday is the day the Lord has made! We need to live lives of worship that go beyond our feelings. Worship isn't a feeling, it's a choice to give God the glory and worth He is due! This popular worship song from Matt Redman is one that I find myself humming (and sometimes singing out loud in the car) often. These powerful lyrics can help lift our hearts from the doldrums of a Monday to the very presence of God. Take a few moments to worship the Lord right now!
Psalm 103:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, 3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases,4 who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, 5 whosatisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
This verse from Proverbs brings a smile to our faces, but the truth of this verse should be taken to heart. In Proverbs the wise and the fool are often contrasted. Dealing with a fool can be very dangerous. Choosing who you associate with is a critical decision in life. Choose wisely, and choose not to be the fool yourself! Seek God's wisdom! Read Proverbs 17 today to grow in wisdom and remove foolishness from your life!
Do you like to wait? I'm going to assume that answer to that question is probably a big NO! Now some of us are more patient than others, but waiting is just plain annoying to most of us. However, God often calls His people to wait. To wait on His timing, to wait on His plans and not ours. This morning as I was reading through Proverbs I was reminded of a simple and yet extremely profound truth. It is a verse God has used many times in my life, but once again I needed a reminder.
Proverbs 16:9 The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.
We make all kinds of plans in life and there is nothing wrong with that, but we need to be willing to submit those plans to the Lord and let Him guide and direct our steps. I am in the middle of a season of life where I am anxiously awaiting the next step. It is easy to talk about waiting, but hard to do it! I read an article the other day that helped set some perspective on God's timing, which is so different than ours. Check out this link, I think it will encourage you and help remind you that sometimes, many times, God's answer to our prayers is wait!
