Transitions are a part of all of our lives! New jobs, the birth of a child, moving, the death of a loved one, an illness, the list is endless. The critical question is how do we navigate the transitions safely? While I am certainly no expert, just a fellow traveler, let me share a key to navigating through transitions that God has taught me. Our eyes need be locked onto Jesus - not our circumstances! When Peter jumped out of a boat on the Sea of Galilee and walked on the water he was able to do the impossible - he walked on water! (Remember this was at Jesus' invitation, do not try at a lake near you!) As long as his eyes were on Jesus he navigated just fine, but when he took his eyes off of Jesus and looked at his circumstances - he was overwhelmed, scared and he began to sink. I can identify! When we walk through transitions our circumstances can be intimidating. Just like the wind and waves overwhelmed Peter! It is easy to look around at our life's circumstances and think - I'm going down!
When Peter started going down (literally) he cried out "Lord, save me" and Jesus reached out His hand a lifted Peter back up. Similarly, when we feel like we are going down - we need to do the same! We need to cry out to Jesus, He is there and He will help! With our eyes on Jesus we can safely and successfully navigate the transitions of life!
A key verse that the Lord has used in my life during this season of transition is Psalm 138:8. The first line says "The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me." What an incredible promise to claim! God has a purpose and plan for each of our lives and even when it feels like we are on a detour, or sailing on stormy and unknown seas - God has a plan and purpose. He can be trusted! He is good! How do we safely and successfully navigate the "transitions" of life? It is quite simple - keep your eyes on Jesus! Should you take your eyes off of Him and once again feel like you are sinking, just remember Peter's prayer - "Lord, save me!"
