One of the neat things about being in a time of transition in ministry is the opportunity to help out in times like this. I told him I would, and made a pot of coffee and sat down to read, pray and prepare. My wife and kids left the house before I did and I enjoyed the quiet of the morning. The Lord directed me to Psalm 55:12 which says "Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved.”
As I often do, I posted it to FB to share the encouragement I had received with others. I finished getting ready and then headed out the door. After getting in the car I turned the key and then “it” happened. Actually, nothing happened! The battery was dead. The peacefulness of the morning was interrupted by panic! I felt a wave of frustration come over me. I wanted to be able to fulfill my promise to go and help. I didn’t want to be stranded!
I saw a child playing at a house down the street, I walked down and asked him if his mom and dad were home - he went in and came out and said no. I sort of doubted that, but on I went around the neighborhood, looking for any sign of activity, to see if there was someone who could help. There was no one else around! As I walked back to the house God began to remind me of the verse I had just meditated on and posted on FB. I heard His voice saying “Do you really believe it and will you trust me?” I began to pray this verse and claim the promise! I cast my burden on the Lord and kept walking back to the house. I looked over at our neighbor's house and it didn’t look like they were home, but I felt led to knock on their door. If you know me, you know this is way out of my comfort zone. I knocked and waited... nothing. I was about to walk away and decided to knock one more time. This time an answer! My neighbor helped me jump my car and I made it to church with about 15 minutes to spare.
In the big scheme of things it was a small thing, but in the moment God used it in a big way to remind me of His faithfulness and provision. What I thought was an interruption and an obstacle, God used to show me His trustworthiness! When I cast my burden on the Lord, He was faithful to sustain me and help me! It was a great reminder that God wants us to do more than read and think about His word. He wants us to do His word! I also learned that if I post it, I need to be ready to pray it!
What burden are you carrying today? Why not do what I did? Cast that burden onto the Lord! The word cast in this verse means “to throw, cast, hurl, fling”. What a great picture! God is faithful to His promises! Fling your burden onto the Lord today! He can handle it and He can help you!
